The Forum for Young Professionals in Policy and Development (YouPaD) has embarked on a transformative journey, aiming to educate and empower young minds about the pressing issue of climate change. Supported by the GreatGreen Fund (GGF), YouPaD recently conducted a comprehensive climate change activity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative was designed to address two primary objectives: raising climate change and environmental awareness in five schools and contributing to the development of a climate change curriculum for senior secondary schools in the FCT. Highlight of the project was tree-planting activities in selected secondary schools. These trees were donated by our partners, Basic Rights Watch (BRE), Deed Support Initiative Int and ECOcykle..
Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Campaign
One of the cornerstone activities of the project was the Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Campaign conducted in five schools within the FCT. The goal of this campaign was to instill a sense of responsibility and urgency regarding environmental issues among students. YouPaD’s team of dedicated professionals and volunteers engaged with students through a series of interactive workshops and discussions.
These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including the science of climate change, its impacts on the environment and human life, and the importance of sustainable practices. Students were encouraged to participate actively, sharing their thoughts and ideas on how they could contribute to mitigating climate change. By fostering an environment of open dialogue and inquiry, YouPaD successfully ignited a passion for environmental stewardship among the young participants.
Contributions to Climate Change Curriculum Development
In addition to the awareness campaign, YouPaD played a pivotal role in lending our intellectual support and recommendations for the development of a climate change curriculum for secondary schools in the FCT. Recognizing the critical need for formal education on climate change, YouPaD collaborated with educational authorities and experts to propose a comprehensive curriculum that integrates climate science with practical solutions and sustainability practices.
The curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address climate change. It includes modules on the causes and effects of climate change, renewable energy sources, conservation strategies, and the role of policy and advocacy in environmental protection. By incorporating real-world examples and case studies, the curriculum ensures that students gain a holistic understanding of the issue and are motivated to take action
Tree Planting Campaign: A Symbol of Commitment
A highlight of YouPaD’s project was the tree planting campaign conducted in the five schools. This initiative was more than just a symbolic gesture; it was a practical step towards improving environmental awareness and fostering a culture of sustainability. Each school participated in planting a variety of native economic tree species, selected for their ability to thrive in the local climate and contribute to ecological balance.
Tree planting has numerous environmental benefits, including carbon sequestration, soil stabilization, and the provision of habitats for local wildlife. For the students, it offered a tangible way to contribute to the fight against climate change. They learned about the importance of trees in maintaining ecological health and were given the responsibility of caring for the newly planted trees, ensuring their growth and survival. Each of the trees was named after a teach or an administrator in each of the schools for the purposes of care and responsibility to nurture the tree.
Impact and Future Directions
The impact of YouPaD’s climate change activity extends beyond the immediate benefits of awareness and education. By engaging young minds and integrating climate change education into the school curriculum, YouPaD is nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious individuals who are equipped to tackle future challenges. The project has also fostered a sense of community and collaboration, as students, teachers, and local authorities worked together towards a common goal.
Looking ahead, YouPaD has set-up a monitoring team for the five schools where this awareness campaign was to carry out another to ensure knowledge sustainability after the project ends. We are also supporting the schools to establish school clubs and further exposing the students to opportunities within the climate change space. YouPaD intends to expand its initiatives to more schools and communities within the FCT and beyond. By leveraging the support of partners like the GreatGreen Fund and continuing to innovate in its approach, YouPaD aims to create a ripple effect of environmental consciousness and action across Nigeria.
Conclusion
The Forum for Young Professionals in Policy and Development (YouPaD) has set a remarkable example of how grassroots initiatives can drive significant change. Through its Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Campaign, contributions to curriculum development, and tree planting activities, YouPaD is empowering young people to become stewards of the environment. This project not only addresses the urgent need for climate education but also inspires hope and action in the face of one of the most pressing challenges of our time. By investing in the education and engagement of youth, YouPaD is building a foundation for a sustainable and resilient future.
