To provide a platform that mainstreams and amplifies the voices, perspectives, ideas, and interests of young people on issues cutting across foreign & domestic policy, peace & security, governance, and climate change, especially at a global level.

Overview and Background

The conversations surrounding critical issues of global significance have mainly been dominated by the views and opinions of “Advanced” nations of the Global North, specifically among the older generations. These groups have decided the rules of engagements and determined the interpretation of specific issues, leading to sentiments and feelings of exclusion from Nations in the Global South and the youth. Admittedly, in recent times, there has been considerable inclusion of young people, whom many have seen to be passionate about global issues and capable of providing solutions to some of the most severe challenges. However, In Africa and Nigeria, this trend is yet to manifest; the older generations have confined the discussions to themselves, acting as some form of “Gatekeepers,” whose permission and consent is required for any other groups to be included. The implication of this being the lack of continuity and absence of fresh ideas, leading to weak engagement on issues of global importance.
Considering the point above, it is clear that young people need to weigh in on the discussion and bring their ideas and skills to ensure Nigeria and Africa’s engagement represents every group’s interests. This is especially important, considering the younger generations form the bulk of the population demography, as Africa is known as “the Young Continent.” The YouPaD is a response to this and would serve as a platform for young people to engage with, discuss, research and analyse issues relating to Foreign & Domestic Policy, Security, Climate Change, Governance & Development. The overarching rationale being – “If they would not let us in, we create our own space,” in line with George Bernard Shaw’s idea of adapting your environment to yourself.
