Gender Inequality and Access to Quality Education

Event Round-up: Gender Inequality and Access to Quality Education| Agora Thursday – Feminist In Context 2/6

Key speaker Linda Raji I Date: 27th July, 2023

Key Message:

In a recent Agora Thursday event titled “Feminist In Context,” held on July 27, 2023, speaker Linda Raji illuminated the persisting issue of gender disparity in education, particularly impacting girls and women in Nigeria. Cultural and religious factors have long been drivers obstructing gender equality and access to quality education. While not all cultures and religions endorse gender inequality, certain traditional beliefs and practices perpetuate harmful gender-based attitudes. This pervasive inequality manifests in various spheres, including the workplace, schools, politics, homes, media, entertainment, and economic opportunities, leading to limited access to education, early child marriages, gender-based violence, health disparities, unequal employment prospects, and restricted participation in decision-making. To combat this inequality, Linda Raji urged the Nigerian government and stakeholders to consider crucial steps, including introducing and implementing free education for girls, promoting scholarships from private institutions, enacting gender-sensitive laws, providing financial aid to underprivileged families, and eradicating child marriages.
