  • World Environment Day: Youth Demand Nationwide Ban on Single-Use Plastics

Plastic pollution has become an aggressive and undeniable threat to our planet, disrupting ecosystems and endangering lives. On World Environment Day 2025, YouPaD joined a powerful coalition of youth advocates and partners to demand bold, urgent action. This was not just a day of awareness; it was a day of clear, unambiguous demands for systemic change.

From polluted oceans to clogged drainage systems in our cities, the consequences of inaction are severe and visible to all. The centerpiece of the day’s advocacy was a powerful call for a nationwide ban on single-use plastics. This initiative, supported by our partners at the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) and Oxfam, highlighted the critical need for tangible legislative action to curb the plastic crisis at its source.

The Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors took to the streets of Abuja, their colourful placards bearing crucial messages like “Plastic no dey digest, e dey kill sea animal and you,” illustrating the profound harm to both wildlife and human health. Their voices represent a generation unwilling to accept half-measures. The time has come for bold, decisive action to reverse the damage and build a cleaner, healthier Nigeria for all.

“Let’s commit to ending plastic pollution and building a cleaner, healthier world. The time to act is now.”
